Pune, January 2025: CSIR-National Aerospace Laboratories, Bangalore, India, Awards Challenging Electric Motor Design Contract to ASPERA International LLP (India) in technical collaboration with PMW Dynamics Limited (UK)
CSIR-National Aerospace Laboratories (CSIR-NAL), Bangalore, part of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), under the Ministry of Science and Technology, India, is the sole government aerospace R&D laboratory in the country’s civilian sector. CSIR-NAL is focused on advanced disciplines in aerospace and is currently entrusted with the responsibility of design & development of a solar powered High-Altitude Platform (HAP) unmanned stratospheric aircraft.
CSIR-NAL has embarked on a challenging application to design and develop a high altitude, long endurance, autonomous ariel platform. The High-Altitude Platform (HAP) Technology Demonstrator is a 150 Kgs, fixed wing platform with a wingspan of approx. 30 metres designed to operate in the stratosphere (operating altitude of 20 km) as a low altitude pseudo-satellite platform carrying a payload of up to 10 Kgs. The goal for this vehicle is to enable communication in rural areas through non-terrestrial networks and to provide remote sensing, agricultural support systems and disaster monitoring capabilities. Recently CSIR-NAL flew their sub-scale 12m wingspan aircraft to an altitude of 25,000 feet with a flight duration of 11 hours and plan to have the full-scale aircraft for a first flight by December 2025.
During the interaction, Dr Venkatakrishnan, Program Director HAP, explained, “Operating in the stratosphere at 20,000 metres provides some exceptionally challenging performance requirements including extreme environmental considerations such as exceptionally low temperature plus the need for high power, high efficiency in an ultra-light weight package. NAL undertook an extensive global survey to locate suitable ‘commercial off-the-shelf’ propulsion motors which concluded with the realisation that our demands are so unique and our operating conditions so extreme, that our aircraft would require a custom/bespoke application specific motor.CSIR-NAL selected ASPERA International (India)-PMW Dynamics (UK) offer to undertake this work. ASPERA International has impressive track record of assisting foreign companies to establish the footprints in India & PMW Dynamics has a long experience and a proven track record of developing high performance electric motors and drives for extremely demanding applications.”
In alignment with the Government of India’s visionary “Make in India” initiative, ASPERA International LLP, headquartered in Pune (India), has proudly partnered with PMW Dynamics to deliver specialized manufacturing capabilities in India’s advanced aerospace sector. Nikhil Deshpande, Managing Partner & CEO of ASPERA International, remarked, “India is witnessing transformative growth across all technological domains, from marine to aerospace. We are thrilled to collaborate with PMW Dynamics to provide a world-class solution to NAL, embodying a ‘designed in the UK, manufactured in India’ ethos.”
Ms. Vibha Joshi, Vice President of ASPERA International, added, “Our mission is to attract cutting-edge technologies to India from all over the globe, driving multi-dimensional growth to the Indian economy.”
